Compulsion for Cycle Planning

Three witnesses including the edtior of The Times newspaper, and the anchor of Channel 4 News give input to the Commons Transport Select Committee on bicycling.

Today, there was some wonderful testimony given at the Commons Transport Select Committee about improving the safety of our environment for people in cars, on bicycles […]

Cycling around Swinley Forest again

Hard to believe it was 9 months ago that we were last at Swinley Forest. Well, that’s the date on one batch of photos I found. This time it was just me and the boys as Katya was with Baba to see the nearby (!?) Windsor Castle.

After a bit of a bite to […]

Cycling to Cambridge conference was like floating on air

King's Cross Station - waiting for the Hogwarts Express to Cambridge.

I am a regular cycle-to-work kind of guy. I started the Cycle Scheme at work to help everyone there get their hands on a good quality bike for a knock-down price (all legal – its a scheme promoted by the Government). For me, that meant buying a Brompton. That was over a year ago now – wow time flies!

Well, this week I took my first expenses-paid business trip by train and bicycle -I can claim 20 pence per mile for bicycle travel (cars get 40 pence per mile – outrageous! Cyclists should be rewarded more!).

WEIGHTLESS BUSINESS TRIP

The reason for the trip was to get up to Cambridge, UK for a conference all about the next generation of wireless communication called Weightless. The conference was put on by Cambridge Wireless and pretty much run by the guys at a local startup there called Neul. I decided to go up a day early so that I could meet with some customers alongside our sales engineer and marketing engineer who flew in from Munich HQ. » Continue reading Cycling to Cambridge conference was like floating on air »

Brompton Baby, yeah!

My folded Brompton

The new cool is not a new car, it’s a new bike.

I have one. Actually I now have three!

One is just a ‘pub bike’, though. My second one is the ‘real’ workhorse, taking me around town and across the BMX track with the family. I bought from our local dealer, North Hants Bikes.

My coolest bike, though, has to be my new Brompton. It’s a foldable bike that is easy to travel on the train with. Brompton is building a strong international reputation for their strong UK bicycle.

(Aside: my friend John, also a “Bromie” owner, told me n = b + 1, where n is the number of bikes you need, and b is the number of bikes you have – I am starting to prove his theorem)

So keen was I for it, that I set up the Cycle Scheme at work so all our employees could benefit from tax breaks to get a new bike for nearly 50% off, financed at 0% for a year through monthly deductions from the paycheck. Thanks taxman! » Continue reading Brompton Baby, yeah! »

Now a One-Car Family

Never before have we been a one-car family.  We are now!

I have taken to using the train for my commute into Fleet this year; and the time had come to renew the insurance on the X-registration (2000) Honda Civic, plus we had to pay a hefty repair bill to get it to pass […]
