Popham Airfield

Been here with your kids recently? Then please leave a comment below.

About the place…

Just a few short miles away from Whitchurch, Hampshire is Popham airfield.

Popham - planes parked and one taking offIt has two grassy runways, a radio operator (not “ATC”), a café, a grapevine (leave some for us to pick!), a pic-nic area, a little forest, a small climbing frame, and a cat. Oh yes, and some planes.

There’s a flight school for those wanting to take to the skies! The place is motorbike friendly – there are usually some pretty interesting bikes parked around the club house!

Popham - large planeWe often take our kids down for an afternoon on weekends. There is always a plane landing, taking off or doing a loop-the-loop. We have seen helicopters, too, but they are rare. We’ve also seen deer running across the runway, towards the moto-cross track nearby – who knows why.

Popham - cockpitAlthough there is a fence around the club-house building where you find the cafeteria, you can open the gate and have a wander around the field. Just don’t stray onto the wrong bit of grass, lest you get a buzz cut. Don’t touch the planes – owners use a lot of spit to keep them sparkling.

The airfield is located along the entrance road to the A303 coming from Overton Road (you can exit the airfield and go back on this road without having to go on the A303).

Here’s a video that I made of a “fly-in” back in 2005:
