Hard to believe it was 9 months ago that we were last at Swinley Forest. Well, that’s the date on one batch of photos I found. This time it was just me and the boys as Katya was with Baba to see the nearby (!?) Windsor Castle.

After a bit of a bite to eat at the – anything you want so long as it’s in a jacket potato – café (we arrived noonish as it took longer than expected to get back from Eton, where we dropped them off), we were onto our bikes and cycling out to watch the BMXers at the far end of the forest. It was wonderful to see so many kids cycling all around, especially at the Sandy Ridge. Both Tolii and Tosha gave cycling jumping a go too – albeit on a less bumpy bit nearby.

Was it me, or is all of the Forest only uphill?

Back at the Lookout, we ate our crisps (everyone deserves a reward after cycling!) and met a man – Paul – who had the most amazing bicycle chair. It was custom made for him, costing a few thousand, but boy it looks great and does the business. He needs it because of an injury in the army; but I and Katya need something like it to exercise our upper body!

I won’t tell Katya that I’ll kit mine out just like Paul’s: with an electric front wheel to assist on those Swinley uphills!

On Tuesday, we went down to Winchester for some post-Christmas shopping (a new jacket ’tis all) and some family ice skating. Before going to the rink, though, we walked along the river path to get to what has got to be the area’s best pub, the Black Boy.

CHIMNEY SWEEPS?
Rumour has it that the pub is named after the kids who were sent up (or down) chimneys to clean them centuries ago. The odd artefacts hanging from the ceiling alone makes it worth the visit; The real ale – I had Goddard’s Scrumdiggity – on tap makes you want to while away the entire afternoon there…And thanks to the many people who have bought us a pint, we could have. However, off we had to go.

CATHEDRAL ATMOSPHERE
You just cannot beat the atmosphere at Winchester Cathedral for outdoor ice skating. The architecture and sense of history all around is stunning, and the friendly people enjoying time out with their families make you feel all good inside.

It was Tosha’s first go at ice skating, and my did he do well! It was just the second time for Tolii – and he was already showing off by doing 360 degree turns (mostly on purpose, other times when getting acquainted with how cold ice is on you bum).

CHEATING
Okay, so there is a fair bit of cheating going on: the rink sits on top of a huge air conditioning unit that keeps the ice solid in air temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees centigrade. That probably accounts for the £30 family ticket price for just an hour of ice time, but that did include skate rental. Cheaper than a ticket to Canada; and skating inside the Basingstoke hockey arena just doesn’t compare.

A superb evening out. Tosha immediately asked, “When can we do that again?”

I am a regular cycle-to-work kind of guy. I started the Cycle Scheme at work to help everyone there get their hands on a good quality bike for a knock-down price (all legal – its a scheme promoted by the Government). For me, that meant buying a Brompton. That was over a year ago now – wow time flies!

Well, this week I took my first expenses-paid business trip by train and bicycle -I can claim 20 pence per mile for bicycle travel (cars get 40 pence per mile – outrageous! Cyclists should be rewarded more!).

WEIGHTLESS BUSINESS TRIP

The reason for the trip was to get up to Cambridge, UK for a conference all about the next generation of wireless communication called Weightless. The conference was put on by Cambridge Wireless and pretty much run by the guys at a local startup there called Neul. I decided to go up a day early so that I could meet with some customers alongside our sales engineer and marketing engineer who flew in from Munich HQ.

I packed my overnight things and a couple cameras (one big, one small) into my Brompton’s front, detachable travel bag. I also tossed in a first-aid kit and a puncture repair kit — thankfully, neither were needed.

LONDON CYCLING

On Thursday, I caught the first off-peak train into London after cycling up to my local station here in Whitchurch, Hampshire. In London, I hopped on my (unfolded) Brompton and started the short cycle ride up to King’s Cross to catch my next train. People at work had asked if I had my insurance all paid up what with travelling in London traffic and all. I was actually more concerned that the car drivers who dare to put a scratch on my bike might not have insurance!

Mind the cows on Cambridge's cycle paths alongside the River Cam!

Boy has London changed for the better in the year since the Barclay’s Bike scheme (aka ‘Boris Bikes’ – named after the mayor) started. There are cycle routes, shared lanes with buses, marked paths, bicycle route signage and HUNDREDS OF CYCLISTS. It is true what I’ve read then: more cyclists make the roads feel safer. And according to the CTC, they are safer!

DING! DING!

Being London, it was a free for all. But one which worked – cyclists and motorists looked out for wayward pedestrians (one ran up behind me and around my front as I was just about to set off from a pedestrian cross walk – he survived me and the revving taxi beside me). Cars and buses accepted (they had no choice really) the half-dozen bicycles around them at any one time; and pedestrians generally kept out of the bike lane – ones that didn’t quickly learned what a loud bell sounds like. Ding! Ding!

Another person commuting to work in Cambridge - mind the swans!

There are some amazing routes in the short distance – mostly backroads and through some nice parks. Beats the Tube in time and beauty. Never has London looked so good. It helped, too, that we are in the midst of a record breaking heat-wave complete with bright shiny object in sky that some have started to call “The Sun” (it is rarely seen and so the name is often forgotten).

King’s Cross station is of course the place to go to run into walls with your luggage trolley. Many people try to recreate the scenes from Harry Potter books, and amazingly fail every time. Does make for an entertaining show, though.

PLATFORM ZERO

Anyway, it was onto the express train up to Cambridge. What platform? ZERO. Well, it was a Weightless conference I was going to (joke at the conference was that the technology isn’t cellular 1G, 2G, 3G or even 4G, it was ZERO G).

Cycle route signs are all about - but sometimes you can still get lost (that's all part of the fun, right?)

The First Capital Connect train was packed and I actually had to fold my Brompton to store it out of the way. Not much hassle to do so, but I still try to be lazy whenever possible (I’ve discovered various nooks and crannies on the South West trains where I can lean it during my daily commute to work).

CAMBRIDGE COWS

Once in Cambridge, I discovered a town that knows how to spoil cyclists! Bridges with cycle paths! Parks with cycle paths! Roads with cycle paths! And riverside paths with cycle routes…and cows! No kidding.

An easy cycle ride along quiet roads to the east of the railway line, and then alongside the River Cam, and before I knew it, I had found my way up to a company for my first pre-conference customer meeting. A quick change of shirt in their reception’s toilet and I was set to meet the engineers for a chat in their spacious offices (there were no chairs or tables in the conference room!).

Cyclists and pedestrians share the road in front of King's College - both mindful of tourists with cameras!

Meetings done, and it was time to head off around Cambridge for more cycling, plus a reconnaissance trip to find the Conference Centre for the meeting on Friday. The Møller Centre was located to the west of town, and so I weaved my way along the river into town – passing King’s College and witnessing my very first cycle collision.

CRASH!

The collision was between two cyclists: one was a woman on a dutch-style bicycle carrying groceries in her basket, the other a street racer complete with lycra and helmet. Guess which one rammed the other? Yup.

Do not enter - except cycles! My kind of sign!

The lady called out “Watch out!” as lycra man darted out of the pedestrian friendly area (open to cyclists too) and onto the main road where our basket lady was gently cycling home (I presume).

The carnage was spectacular: basket lady tipped slowly sideways and her fruit went rolling out of the basket. Lycra man circled back (he wobbled on after knocking her over) and asked if she was okay – she was, but boy were there going to be some nasty bruises on those apples. Her melons appeared to be unscathed.

They both continued on their way, and the cars hardly noticed the brief pause in their rush-hour commute.

WRONG TURN TURNS RIGHT

Meanwhile, behind me while composing this shot...CRASH!

Anyway, I continued on – along what I believed was the route west towards the conference centre. There was a lovely marked cycle route – It was super: well marked and alongside, rather than on, the road. Trouble was, I wasn’t on the right path!

So, turning around, I switched on my TomTom while parked beside the Welcome-To-Cambridge sign in order to figure out just where I had ended up. South-West. I needed to be more North-West. No probs – I was enjoying the cycle ride in the warmth – I doubled back a short bit and headed north. One more wrong turn (I had deliberately turned off my TomTom because sometimes it’s fun to discover things when you get lost) and before long I was at the Centre.

Now I know what the western welcome to Cambridge looks like. Time to turn around!

Reconnaissance done, it was time to head back into town and check into my hotel, the De Vere Group’s “University Arms”.

I cannot recommend the place highly enough: Friendly staff, lovely interior and exterior (except for the 1970s frontage on one side but I’ll forgive them for that late addition). Delicious British Breakfast too – best sausages and bacon I’ve had in a long time (sorry dear).

The hotel is right beside Parker’s Piece – a park that is a gathering place for students (presumably) out enjoying a summer’s autumn evening. All fine during the day, but there can be a bit of whooping going on – by the girls mainly – after dark. Nothing unsightly (that I could see from my window – damn it) but just youth enjoying themselves.

Local real ale on tap at the Weatherspoon's pub in Cambridge.

In the end, the happy sounds didn’t bother me much – I had popped across the street earlier to the Weatherspoons pub for dinner and a tasty Dickens real ale before relaxing with a couple of whiskys at a nearby bar. Good whisky and you’re good to go (to sleep) no matter what.

CONFERENCE THEN BACK TO LONDONTOWN

Filled up with food and coffee, I checked out, and hopped on my Brompton for the short cycle across town and up to the conference (I only had a minor wrong turn, quickly corrected). My Munich colleague didn’t fly over with his bicycle, so he took a cab up.

The Møller Centre in Cambridge - complete with cycle parking!

My folded Brompton fitted neatly into a luggage storage area near the Centre’s reception area. After the day’s entertainment (for a geek like me, it really was entertainment), it was time to head back to the train station for the return journey. “The Sun” was still shining and the temperature had hit a record of 29.2C. Perfect for cycling. Even better – I got to pass all the people stuck in their cars going nowhere.

I had hoped to join the Critical Mass London cycling outing at 6pm down at Waterloo Bridge, but unfortunately, the 4:45pm train decided to apply its emergency brakes just outside London – 90mph to 0 in just a few meters – and sulk like that for 15 minutes.

Secret cycle path gets you the best view of Kings College and punters on the River Cam in Cambridge!

Eventually, the driver figured out how to reboot the train’s computer (cut power to entire train then switch on again) and we were off albeit at 30mph for a few miles to ensure the train wouldn’t act up again. Anyway, all this meant that I didn’t get back to King’s Cross until after 6pm.

The University Arms hotel is a site to behold in a location overlooking a (sometimes noisy) park.

LOST IN LONDON

As it was, I got lost on the streets of London again. No big deal – every cyclist I met was very friendly and helpful (the ones with cycling helmets went whizzing past on their quest to break a world record, or their heads, so they weren’t evaluated – it must be true what I’ve heard: wearing a helmet makes you think you are safer and so tend to take more risks).

One lovely lady, Debbie, was able to get me going in the right direction because she was heading into the West End which is near to Waterloo station. At each traffic light we had a short chat. Turns out she is a dresser for actors in Les Miserables and was also stuck on that same train as me coming down from Cambridge. Good thing the train got going or else the French would have looked awfully English in the performance that night (how does one transform into a French person?).

Spacious room 215 at The University Arms - complete with creaking floor and super view of sunrise.

(I remember seeing Les Miz for the first time way back in the late 80s – or was it early 90s? – in Toronto. I’ve seen it in London since, but that was probably 10 years ago. Time to go again!)

LIGHTS ON

At last, Waterloo was in my sight and onto the train I got. Pretty packed but it was a Friday night – and not everyone has tickets to a show or a dinner engagement. I got out my Kindle (which now I cannot find) and continued my reading of Stairlift to Heaven by Terry Ravenscroft. Tip: be prepared to laugh out load and attract attention to yourself – it is a funny book! You’ve been warned.

Sunrise over Parker's Piece park in Cambridge as seen from room 215 of The University Arms

At last, several hours after leaving Cambridge, I was back in Whitchurch and had to turn on my lights and cycle home in the dark for the first time this year. All told, a fantastic business trip. More like that please!

The day started fine; with a walk up to nursery to drop off Tosha – who definitely did not like being left behind. As soon as he’s four, like Tolii was last year, then he gets to come too. Logic doesn’t matter. Lots of tears and fuss (and rightly so, he’d say) – luckily, his best friend Josh was already at nursery.

Tolii and I walked over to the train station to catch the 10:12 departure – we had 10 minutes to get our tickets. Some fuss with the (new) station ticket guy who took his time selling the “Friends and Family” card and our tickets.

Luckily, I had already filled in the form for the discount card. Even so, I had to egg him along to take my money (£24 for the card and £28 for the journey) while Tolii stood on the platform saying, “Daddy, I see the train’s light – its coming!!”. A mad dash, up and over the bridge to the other platform and whew! we were on the train.

We played Rush Hour all the way past Farnborough. Tolii asked for a drink and I got one from the ruck sack.

That’s when I noticed that the folder with the tube map and, most importantly, the show’s tickets was not there! Time to PANIC!

Ice rink at Natural History Museum

By a very lucky coincidence, the Southwest train guard was just coming through the carriage to check our tickets. I told him that I left the folder at the ticket counter in my rush to catch the train. The guard said he would see what he could do – he went to the end of the train and somehow managed to reach the ticket man at the Whitchurch station.

The guard said the ticket man would have to ring his manager to see what he could do (!). The guard wasn’t too impressed (sounds like a jobsworth situation). He rang him back after we stopped at our penultimate station (“should we get off and return to Whitchurch?”, I asked. “No,” the guard said, “the station will be closed by the time you get back.” — more panic sets in, and a touch of dispair).

Again, the ticket man said he would have to talk to his manager. A third call was placed.

Tolii skating for the first time!

Success!

The ticket man gave the folder to the guard on the train behind us, which was just leaving Whitchurch station! We could pick it up at Waterloo station in one hour! RELIEF!

I had to walk up and down Waterloo station about 3 times to calm down. Thankfully, Tolii is used to daddy’s wanderings and enjoyed the escapade. We popped into the ticket office and I filled in a “Any Complains?” form, changing the title to “Any thanks?” and filled in a thank you note for our train’s guard.

A nice cup of cappuccino and a lemon/orange muffin later, and we had the folder from the next train’s guard. It was finally time to set off!

Wipeout!

We took the tube to South Kensington station (Tolii loves all the escalators in the tube). We walked over to towards the museums – not quite sure where to spend the time before our show, or where to get lunch.

There were posters up for 3D Imax movies about space (and dinosaurs) at the Science Museum. Perhaps that’s what we could do?

What a fast learner!

We came out of the subway tunnel at the Natural History museum. That’s when we saw it. “Tolii,” I said, “will it be that or the space movie?”. “That,” he said, “’cause we see lots of space movies and we have never been ice skating before!”.

Yes, we went ice skating!

It was Tolii’s first time; and the first time for me in a couple of years (or was it just one year since Katya and I went to Winchester Cathedral’s rink?). Darn if it wasn’t expensive (just shy of £20, but that did include skate rental for the hour and a bit).

Tolii holds daddy up!

I taught Tolii the trick of looking straight ahead and keeping one skate pointed to what he’s looking at. Then I said to push, push, push with the other foot.

He did it!

Ya, there were a few wipeouts but that became part of the fun. There was a lovely little practice rink where we spent most of the time, and we did venture out onto the big rink to do a few laps near the end of the hour.

Time for some lunch!

Ring of light at the Science Museum

We stuck our head into the Science Museum’s cafeteria but didn’t like the look of the chicken pie or curry. We left (but only after Tolii playing one game of the Martian lander game) and headed towards the Royal Albert Hall.

Clock at Imperial College

On the way we saw Imperial College – a place where Katya has been many times for work; I recalled her saying there was a funky place to eat there. Well, we didn’t find anything funky (we did see a wonderful clock in the mechanical engineering building though).

We found a cafeteria, where we had a cheese burger each while nestled at a table amongst all the buzz-buzz buzzing 20-somethings with their iPhones and other electric gadgets. Ah, I remember the days; and reminisced with Tolii a bit (who sort of was listening, but was mostly dipping the chips into the ketchup and eating them; the more I talked, the more chips there were for Tolii). There were signs about for a rally on Saturday to protest against the latest Israeli war (in Gaza).

Finally - the Royal Albert Hall

Right – time to head out to the 3pm show! We walked the short distance to the Royal Albert Hall and went inside. We found our seats. Last year we were up in a box. This year we were in row C – one row from the stage (there was no row A). Wow. After the intermission (Tolii likes Appletiser!) we moved to the empty seats in the next section and had a front-row view. Wow-wow!

Tolii said he preferred the boxes because he got to see the whole stage. I liked this year’s seats because you could see the expression on the performers’ faces, and their budging muscles!

Let's watch the show!

It was a very entertaining show (the first half was better than the second half).

Tolii liked so many things in it – the skipping rope act was particularly good (triple-skipping: one guy skipping inside another pair’s skipping rope who were also skipping inside a third outter pair — how do you coordinate jumping over three skipping ropes!? Amazing).

The clown act of making a silent movie using four members of the audience was very funny, too.

Natural History museum's ice rink at night

The show finished just after 6pm. We walked back to the tube (stopping to take a picture of the ice rink at night) and onto our train home from Waterloo – it was packed, as I expected it would be. We played Rush Hour all the way to Overton!

Tosha was very please to see us home. He was in bed, reading a book with Baba, but came downstairs to listen to our tales while we had some supper. Finally, it was time for bed.

Until next year (with Tosha)…I wonder what show it will be then…

Update: now you can read about the place on our kids’ outings page.

Katya was between Gatwick airport and home (Baba flew home today) so it was just daddy, granny and the kids. After a bit of a struggle to find where things like waterproofs were “organized” in the house, we found our way there during a fortunate break in the weather.

Katie and Amy arrived before us and had been very busy gathering specimens to study. They had caught three tadpoles in varying stages of development! Daddy made some joke about being thirsty and next thing you know both Tosha and Tolii wanted to drink the glass of pond water with the tadpoles in them. Mmm, mmm crunchy. Thank goodness mummy wasn’t there.

Tosha (“Anton”) was right at home in the rain — there were puddles everywhere to be splashed in (and rocks thrown in to make bigger splashes). Tolii thoroughly enjoyed the fishing and the other hidden gem: a play park with a monkey swing!
