For four days of this year’s spring half-term week, Tolii was experiencing a “proper” outdoor camp run by the YMCA near Botley. Where “Proper outdoor” in this case means that the camp simply doesn’t have indoor facilities, except a small breakfast room; so whatever the weather is, the kids are outside!
Every day, Tolii brought home a bag of muddy clothes, even when the weather was sunny all day (it did pour non-stop 7am-7pm on one of the days, though).
Oh the tales he was telling us!
“There was a wire across the river (… this was verified later as truth …) and you go faster and faster and it does loop-the-loop! And the river is about 300m wide!”
To be fair to Tolii, he didn’t embellish the description with a crocodile in the river!
Or how about this one: “We went fishing with a net, but caught only a newt and we cooked it for dinner” (later identified as just a pond dipping session).
Probably the best bit was the bouncy cushion: an inflatable heavy duty rubber thing, the size of a 25m swimming pool, that gently sloped towards the edges, into a surrounding sandpit. Guess whose car needs cleaning now?
