The Whitchurch Delivery Office Shuts

Sorting the mail.

Sorting the mail.

Sadly, today was the last day for the Whitchurch Delivery (aka Sorting) Office.

I took some pictures; and made a video — read on to get to the video…

A gallant campaign was fought about 5 years ago to save the post office (and the sorting office).

That battle was won, but the war wasn’t over.

Royal Mail sold off its Victorian Building soon after this and then rented it back.  This bought them some time until the local upset had subsided.

This year, Royal Mail stated that the sorting office would “move” to Basingstoke as a cost-saving measure.

The local politicians, national politicians, local community volunteers, forum participants, and just plain old locals tried in vain to get Royal Mail to change its mind.

There were statements from Royal Mail about it being a cost-saving measure; and from others in Royal Mail to the effect that, because it was in a listed building, and because the Overton and Whitchurch towns were growing, they could not fit any more sorting bays in the office.

I say, just because a place is listed, doesn’t mean it cannot be extended!  And whose stupid (smart?) idea was it to sell off a building they had likely written off half a century ago?

So, a sad day today, as the folks in the sorting office did what they and the predecessors had done since 1902 and would do no more: they sorted the mail and set off to deliver it.

Stamp cancelled on the last day.

I got up early this morning so I could document the “occasion”.

Lastly, all the frames were removed to Basingstoke.

The “man in charge”, as he called himself, Rowley Hutchins, gave me permission to watch and record the final day at the sorting office.  He also gave me a nice souvenir.

Finally, the video! Watch it below, or download it here (read the license):

I went over to the delivery office in Whitchurch, Hampshire, UK to document their final day of operations on Saturday, 2 May 2009, just before Royal Mail consolidated the work into their Basingstoke office.
