Climate Changed – Our Big Freeze

London Ice Age

London Ice Age

This past week has been phenomenal in terms of disruption, snowfall, ice, and fun.

It started last Monday with a huge snowfall, a closed school and all of us staying in the town – taking ‘holiday’ from work.

The holiday continued on Tuesday with the snow turning into ice and still no school, or work.  Our local shops ran out of ‘green’ (low fat) milk.  We put on a few pounds because we had to drink the ‘blue’ milk.  Apart from that, life seemed mostly normal except for all the white stuff (snow, not milk).

Wednesday and Thursday were about typical – back to school and work.  Basingstoke got a good dumping on Thursday which snarled traffic, but luckily not the M3 too much.

Friday saw a return to the wintry snowfall and an early closing of the school and nursery.  Katya was in London holding interviews at Imperial College and worrying that she may be staying over the night because of the snow in Basingstoke.  Her worst fear: getting to Basingstoke and no further — a chilling thought!  Our friends had already agreed to pick up Tolii and Tosha for the evening, they just got a few extra hours of their company when school shut at 2:30pm.  Both boys used this time well: many games on their Wii game console.

Saturday started with a question: should we go to swim lessons or not?  The entire Bell Yard was covered in ice; and the hill to the north of our house was steeper and also similarly covered.  We decided to turn over and sleep some more.  By afternoon, we were able to head out – Granny hosted Tolii while Katya, Tosha and I went into Andover to do some shopping (including buying some ‘green’ milk).

And now, the Met office predicts severe gales and flooding for this week.  The joy of winter continues.  Forget the debate about climate change – it should now be stated in the past tense: Climate Changed.
