What a frosty day for a Sunday ride about the town…in a sleigh (okay, okay, it had wheels).
First though, our boys had to help out getting the horses ready. Penny and Heather keep their horses and ponies in the field beside The Weir, here in Whitchurch. They brought along plenty of brushes (and a very bouncy dog). The horses were very pleased to be lavished with so much attention!
Tolii was up and onto the saddle for a clip-clop around The Millennium Meadow. The bouncy dog, well, bounced alongside and through the bushes nearby. He was born to be a kangaroo (the dog, not the horse, nor Tolii).
Then it was Tosha’s turn. He was so confident and overjoyed that he stuck out his tongue and then smiled all the while balancing on the pony’s back – he even took his feet out of the stirrups!
When I asked what it felt like he said…bouncy.
The highlight of the morning came when we hooked up the sleigh (okay, okay, carriage) to a beautiful white horse for a canter around town.
We held up plenty of traffic and made many people turn their heads to watch us! What fun.
The most exciting bit was when we climbed to the top of the hill on Well’s Lane and I asked Penny if the sleigh carriage had brakes. She pointed ahead and said, “he’s our engine and our brakes!”
I crossed my fingers that Penny had remembered to put on the snow tyres shoes.
Luckily, we escaped certain death and came to a controlled stop at the crossing at the bottom. Then it was up the next hill, across the cut-through and up another hill to the top of town. We trotted (okay, maybe cantered) along Lynch Hill Park and then down London Street back into the town’s centre.
More cars, more people. What fun! Our fingers were getting a little bit cold, but we didn’t care!
The boys and I had a thrilling time.
Back at the Weir we helped with unbuckling all the straps and putting the horses back into the field. Then it was time to splash in the puddles! Tosha jumped so hard that he splashed himself soaking wet. So, off to nearby Graham’s house to dry the dripping trousers by the log fire and enjoy a cup of tea (Tosha even stole my tea after finishing his own).
Then mummy arrived back to pick us up. But her car had a flat tyre! Oh what excitement to end the morning as the boys watched daddy put on the spare.
Even more photos are in our gallery.
