No sooner had grandpa arrived that he departed…for a splendid day out on the Mid-Hants Watercress Line!
The weather, was bland, bordering on pouring rain (luckily not until we got home). However, that made for some great lighting for my photos — see our gallery!
This is a steam train line that has many engines and rolling stock from yesteryear. The volunteers are really into it, too. It ain’t cheap (£12 per adult/senior, £6 per child). Luckily, we had won a family pass at the Whitchurch Primary School’s fun evening.
We boarded the 1pm steam train at New Alresford and headed up to Alton.
And as luck would have it, this was the first Sunday in the month, which means there was also a vintage double-decker bus ride in Alton (free!). The 1950s bus really did have to struggle to get to its zippy 38mph — and we all were told that we might have to get out and push it when it came time to climb some of the hilly roads!
We hopped off the return train at the Ropley station in order to see the engine workshop. Again, as luck would have it, we found James and Thomas the Tank Engine in the yard! James had his face off, it was being polished in the shop, in anticipation of next week’s Thomas Days Out event. Thomas, though, was in fit form - the boys climbed up onto his bumper and smiled, smiled, smiled (and got wet trousers from the puddles on it).
Then it was off to the playground and soon enough it came time to catch the last train back to New Alresford. Tosha fell asleep in the car on the way home (as he often does!).
