Power Picnic and Josh Sleepover

Panorama of Millennium Meadow near stream

I’ve lost track of how many Power Picnics we’ve hosted over at the Millennium Meadow.  I think today was the third.  Sorry, yesterday.  I really must start these blogs entries earlier, lest I fall further behind — forgive me…I was listening to music while sprawled on the sofa with my feet and legs twinging from the after-shock of having been stung by stinging nettles. Lots of stinging nettles.  Katya still insists that its therapeutic.

Josh and Rachel joined us on the Meadow with their dad, Kudrat.  He and I pushed the serviced mower around while Katya and the kids cleared the watercress and clogging weeds from the stream.  When we arrived, the spring was not flowing at all — but after their efforts it was flowing wonderfully again.  The kids used the opportunity to do some bug hunting.  Rachel found a tiny fish and a small frog.  The boys found bugs.  Lots of bugs.

We all took a break and relaxed in the hot sun (28C today, feeling even hotter in the direct sun): It was time for the BBQ!  Mmm, sausages and hamburgers.

We might have had chicken, too, had I communicated more clearly with granny, who was waiting at home for a lift.  She has two legs, come on!  Ooops.  Maybe it was for the best, we later decided when she popped over to our house.  It was rather baking in the sun; and there was nowhere to sit except on the mowed grass.

After the Meadow, we headed home and soon Josh joined us.  He was dropped off by Kudrat who was off home to enjoy a child-free evening with his lovely wife Jackie.

All three boys played and played.  Then, we got the pool out and they splashed and splashed!  I went off to snooze.  Ya, some snooze: 3 hours!  And my legs were still tingling.  Granny had arrived meanwhile and got thoroughly soaked by the boys.

Finally, it was time for a bit of dinner, another dip in the pool (instead of the bath) and off to bed for the boys.  There was lots of excitment, as you can imagine.  I was asked to read two stories by Dr.Seuss: Green Eggs and Ham, followed by Sneeches.

“Off to sleep boys!”, I said as I retreated to the office - knowing they were not evening THINKING about sleep yet.

Sure enough, out came Tosha and Josh…”We need another wee!”.  Well, alright then.  And so it continued for another half-hour.   Josh did ask for mummy and daddy once, for he is pretty young to be away from home (fine I say).  I asked him how he felt: “Scared”, he said.  “Why?”, I asked.  “Because Tolii and Tosha are keeping me awake!” And, added, “I want a bed to myself” (Tosha had taken it upon himself to snuggle up with him).

Ha!  I told Tolii and Tosha to get into their own beds and to be perfect hosts by going to sleep right away.

That worked!  I called Kudrat up soon afterwards to tell them that all was well.  He was in shock that Josh was asleep so soon.  Maybe there’s something about the house that it puts us to sleep…(mind you, here I am up again until 1:30am writing blog entries).
