Pig Racing

To round out this May Bank Holiday Weekend we visited a farm park near Stone Henge which we have never been to before, but had read good things about: Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm, also known as Cholderton Charlie’s Farm.

Their website sadly, as of May 2008, wasn’t too inspiring. But that made the pleasure of the place all that more great - for it is pretty good fun. Have a look at all the photos Andrew took!

In the first barn, there are plenty of exotic rabbits to oogle at, including one that looks more like a dog; and some that were even bigger than our cats!

In the barn next door was a large climbing frame playground, and a climbing wall. Off to the side was a sitting area with a coffee machine — the place knows kids will be in this part for quite a while…

Then it was time for a ride on the tractor wagon. It was a 10 minute circle around the farm.

Afterwards, we went to the cafeteria for what we thought would be a quick bite before heading out again to see the pig racing. Unfortunately, this is where we hit the two snags that put a bit of a sour note on the day (but only slightly): the slow service and the wrong pricing. They didn’t tell us that it would be over 30 minutes before our chilli and soups would be ready; and then they charged us almost double the advertisted price for the soup. At least though, they did hold our order when the delay was finally admitted - we didn’t miss the pig race and got back to be served our lunch promptly.

The pig race. It happens pretty fast. Who knew pigs could run like greyhounds? It was quite fun to see them come barreling down the first stretch to cut the corner into the final straightaway before cutting the final corner to reach their reward (food!).

After lunch, we went to their small forest that had a fun playground inside it. Tolii and Tosha spent over an hour there - mainly on the “sunken” trampoline. Who’d thought that by digging a hole and putting a trampoline in it that it would be so much better than having it on a stand with netting all around. Brilliant. Shh…daddy even went for a few bounces. What a strange feeling - it must have been 20 years since he did any trampoline jumping. The weirdest part was trying to bouce up and then land on your bum — the 40 year old brain just doesn’t think it is the right thing to do. Then he tried doing a flip and saw the world upside down for the first time in a while, too.

Finally, we headed to the large field with all the goats, pigs and donkeys in it. There’s even a cute attraction in the middle of the field: one bundle of hay, one broken wooden house and a solid brick house. Guessed? Of course, its the three little pigs’ house! And the best bit was you could go inside the little enclosure to play with the three piglets themselves! Just watch your toes and fingers - those pigs are hungry!

Tip: save the money and don’t buy the bag of feed. We ended up carrying our bags around most of the day; the animals are friendly enough to let you pet them without requiring food as an incentive.
